Wildlife incidents in France spark public debate
Two separate incidents involving wildlife in France have triggered public controversy regarding animal welfare and public safety.
In Haute-Saône, images of a headless deer circulated on social media, leading to accusations of poaching. However, local authorities and the prefecture confirmed the animal had been suffering from severe, infected wounds sustained during the rutting season. Following a request from the French Biodiversity Agency (OFB), the animal was euthanized to end its suffering and prevent danger to motorists.
In the Doubs region near Besançon, authorities are searching for a chamois reported to have attacked several hikers and runners in the Chapelle-des-Buis area. While no fatalities have occurred, one runner sustained serious injuries requiring stitches after being struck by the animal. The search for the chamois has divided public opinion, with some calling for its removal and others defending the animal's right to exist in its natural habitat.
