Wildlife monitoring and conservation efforts reported in Chile and Colombia

In Chile, farmers in the Quilaco area of the Bío Bío region are on alert following reports of puma attacks on sheep. The Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) has visited affected sectors, provided instructions to producers, and installed camera traps to monitor feline movement. Local authorities noted that while attacks may have decreased in some areas, new reports have emerged from Piñiquihue and Quilapalo. The movement of these predators is believed to be driven by the search for food for their young ahead of the dry summer season.

In Colombia, a conservation strategy has been implemented across 48 Civil Society Natural Reserves spanning 18 municipalities within the Cornare jurisdiction. Supported by Masbosques through a Payment for Environmental Services (PSA) scheme, the initiative involved an investment of approximately $380 million. The program provides bimonthly economic incentives to landowners who commit to protecting biodiversity. As part of the monitoring efforts, 58 camera traps were installed in 24 reserves to study local wildlife and ecosystem health.
