Wildlife observations reported in Kozłowieckie Forests and Olsztyn
In the Kozłowieckie Forests near Lubartów, footage has captured young male deer training for the upcoming rutting season. The animals were observed wrestling and rolling in the mud, a behavior typical of younger individuals preparing for the competitive mating period that usually occurs between late September and October.
In Olsztyn, conservation efforts are underway to protect a rare population of northern lapwings. Naturalist Przemysław Bartos has documented the presence of four breeding pairs near Towarowa Street, an area characterized by wetlands and a retention reservoir. Given that the species' population is declining by approximately 40% every decade across Europe due to agricultural changes and wetland drainage, a proposal has been submitted to the Olsztyn City Council to establish an ecological reserve named ‘Ostoja czajek’ to safeguard the habitat.
