Wildlife officials issue warnings after bear sightings in Washington and British Columbia

Wildlife officials in the Pacific Northwest are issuing warnings following recent bear encounters in Washington and British Columbia.

In Whatcom County, Washington, the Department of Fish and Wildlife has increased patrols after a woman hiking with a leashed dog encountered a black bear near Lake Whatcom. This marks the 32nd reported bear sighting in the county in 2026. Officials advise hikers to make noise, keep pets leashed, and carry accessible bear spray to minimize conflict.

In Lions Bay, British Columbia, search and rescue teams have issued a warning after a young male grizzly bear was spotted near Deeks Lake. While the bear has appeared calm and has not approached hikers, authorities noted that grizzly sightings are rare in the area. Residents are urged to respect the animal's space and manage attractants to prevent close encounters.
