Nordelta resident investigated for shooting at capybaras

Sebastián Favre, a 49-year-old resident of the Los Alisos neighborhood in Nordelta, is under judicial investigation after being filmed shooting at a group of capybaras from his garden. The incident, which occurred on September 17, was captured by neighbors and subsequently went viral, prompting reports from local residents and animal protection groups like ‘La Voz de los Carpinchos’.

Following the viral footage, police conducted a search of Favre's property, seizing an air rifle and clothing that matched the video. The Nordelta Neighborhood Association (AVN) filed a complaint with the Benavídez Prosecutor's Office, and the resident was fined 4.5 million pesos for violating internal community regulations regarding the use of weapons.

The Defensoría del Pueblo of Buenos Aires has requested that the charges be upgraded to include crimes against wildlife protection under National Law 22.421, arguing that the act constitutes hunting through harassment and pursuit of protected species. Investigators are currently determining if any animals were injured and are evaluating potential charges related to the illegal possession or use of weapons in a residential area.
