Wildlife sightings reported in San Nicolás and Esteros del Iberá
Recent wildlife sightings in Argentina highlight the presence and reintroduction of key species in various ecosystems. In San Nicolás, a maned wolf (aguará guazú) was spotted moving through urban areas near José Ingenieros and Lamadrid before crossing the Yaguarón River. This follows previous sightings in the region, including a monitored specimen in 2024 and another that traveled over 1,300 kilometers across Buenos Aires and Santa Fe.
In the Esteros del Iberá, a viral video captured a jaguar named Jasy’i perched in a tree while surrounded by a herd of peccaries. Jasy’i, a female born in semi-captivity, is part of a reintroduction program aimed at restoring the apex predator to the Corrientes ecosystem. Biologists suggest the jaguar may be pregnant, signaling potential success for the initiative. While jaguars are natural predators of peccaries, the interaction demonstrates the shifting ecological dynamics in the wetlands, where approximately 25 individuals are currently estimated to live in the wild.
