WildSafeBC coordinator Lisa Thomson resigns after grizzly bear deaths
Lisa Thomson, the WildSafeBC Community Coordinator for Nelson, has resigned from her position following a month of emotional distress and online harassment. Her departure follows the decision by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) to euthanize a grizzly sow and one of her yearlings on August 12 and 14.
Thomson, who had served in the role for five seasons, expressed disappointment after learning about the bears' deaths via social media. She noted that the yearling euthanized on August 12 had a deformed leg, which she believes may have been an injury sustained during infancy. Thomson also highlighted the negative impact of online attacks, stating that many people have reverted to being “nasty online” rather than maintaining kindness and compassion.
