Wildwood Ecoforest stewards launch campaign to pay down mortgage

The Ecoforestry Institute (EIS) has launched the ‘Burn the Mortgage’ campaign to pay down the debt used to acquire Wildwood Ecoforest near Ladysmith. The organization originally planned the campaign for September but has extended it through October following a donor's offer to match community contributions up to $10,000.

According to EIS board director Kathy Code, approximately $4,000 has been raised toward the matching goal so far. The property was purchased in 2016 following a legal battle in the B.C. Supreme Court that allowed the EIS to re-buy the land from The Land Conservancy. The purchase involved an $800,000 package, which included a $450,000 mortgage through Vancity.

Wildwood Ecoforest utilizes ecoforestry management, a method established by Merv Wilkinson in 1945 that focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem health through selective harvesting rather than clear-cutting and replanting.
