Wilfrido Vargas honored at Niagara Falls with Dominican flag lights

Dominican merengue icon Wilfrido Vargas will be honored on 16 August during an illumination ceremony at Niagara Falls on the United States side. The falls will be lit in the colors of the Dominican flag as part of the commemoration of the Dominican Republic’s Restoration Day.

The award is organized by Copropcanada, the body that manages the Niagara Falls lighting displays. A letter signed by Copropcanada president Danny Chevalier confirmed that the committee selected Vargas in recognition of his five‑decade career and his role in promoting Dominican culture worldwide. The ceremony follows a tradition of honoring prominent Dominican cultural figures, such as composer William Liriano (2023), singer Fernando Villalona (2024), and artists Sergio Vargas and Rafael Solano (2025).
