Will Smith recounts creation of ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ theme song
The theme song for ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ remains a significant cultural staple in Black television history. Will Smith recently shared details regarding the song's creation during a 2024 interview with Hot 97.
Before the final version was recorded, legendary producer Quincy Jones created a version of the theme. However, Smith felt the initial version did not resonate with him. After consulting with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Smith wrote the rap that became the iconic opening to the series. The duo recorded the track in a hotel room using a four-track recorder to present to Jones.
