Willem Wilbrink's Dachau wartime claims face scrutiny

Historians and institutions are questioning the wartime claims of 99-year-old Willem Wilbrink, who has long maintained that he was a resistance member and saved dozens of lives while held in the Dachau concentration camp during World War II.

The NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies noted that Wilbrink’s name does not appear in the official Nazi administration records for Dachau, despite the high level of detail in those archives. A spokesperson for NIOD described the longevity and media presence of these unverified claims as “virtually unique” in the Dutch context.

Wimar Jaeger, chairman of the Netherlands Dachau Committee, stated that the committee has had doubts regarding the veracity of Wilbrink’s stories since 2024, noting that many details in his biography were “impossible” to verify. While Wilbrink has dismissed these reports as “slander and libel,” claiming the camp records are incomplete, researchers suggest the lack of evidence creates significant gaps in his narrative.
