Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopens after fatal tiger attack

An inquest has provided new details regarding the death of William Chapman, a 24-year-old former child actor who was fatally attacked by a Siberian tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster.

Chapman died on October 10, 2026, after scaling two security fences to enter the enclosure of Altai, an Amur tiger weighing approximately 190-200 kilograms. Witnesses reported that Chapman appeared to be wearing headphones and behaving erratically, even asking a visitor to photograph him near the enclosure before entering. An eyewitness described Chapman as approaching the animal with open arms.

The coroner's inquest confirmed the cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries. During the proceedings, it was revealed that Chapman had a history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia and previous psychotic episodes. His family has expressed significant concerns regarding the level of mental health services he was receiving prior to the incident.

The City of Doncaster Council is currently conducting a health and safety investigation into the breach. Meanwhile, Yorkshire Wildlife Park has reopened its “Land of Tigers” exhibit. The park confirmed that Altai is safe, well, and will not be euthanized.
