William Lawrence Wins Michigan’s 7th District Democratic Primary
William Lawrence, co‑founder of the Sunrise Movement, won the Democratic primary in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. With about 43% of the vote he defeated former U.S. ambassador Bridget Brink (≈29%) and retired Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam (≈28%). The Associated Press called the race after more than half of the ballots were counted.
Lawrence was endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders and other progressive figures such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib. His campaign focused on opposition to new data‑center projects, Medicare for All, a federal moratorium on AI data centers, and ending U.S. arms sales to Israel. A mysterious super‑PAC spent more than $1 million in the final weeks to promote Lawrence and attack his opponents.
The 7th District is a key swing seat; Donald Trump won it by a single point in 2024. Lawrence will face Republican incumbent Rep. Tom Barrett in the November general election, a contest that is expected to be one of the most competitive House races nationwide.
