William & Mary defeats Villanova 35-32 with last-second field goal
William & Mary secured a 35-32 victory over Villanova in their Patriot League season opener following a dramatic final-minute comeback. Max Lipinski sealed the win with a 45-yard field goal as time expired.
Villanova held a 10-point lead with less than three minutes remaining after quarterback Pat McQuaide threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Binkowski. However, William & Mary scored 13 points in the final minute, aided by an interception return by Cade Ellis and a touchdown pass from Winston Watkins to Kai Austin.
McQuaide, who was cleared to play via a preliminary injunction on the day of the game, threw for 270 yards but also recorded three interceptions. Villanova head coach Mark Ferrante noted that the team struggled with turnovers and penalties, stating, “We made a lot more mistakes than they did.”
