William Shatner criticizes Aldi UK over debt recovery dispute

Actor William Shatner has publicly criticized Aldi UK following a dispute involving an intimidating letter sent to the son of Radio Essex presenter Chris Brooks. The controversy began when Brooks reported that the supermarket chain threatened his son with debt recovery action regarding a £97.64 overpayment. Brooks noted that the letter demanded immediate payment by a date set two weeks before the letter was even issued and claimed the retailer had not mentioned the error prior to the warning.

Shatner, known for his role as Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, responded to the situation on X, suggesting that Aldi’s accounting department “does not know how to count or use a calendar.” He also questioned the cost-effectiveness of the company sending such a letter for a relatively small amount. Aldi UK responded to the social media posts by stating they were unable to assist via customer services and advised the individual to use the contact details provided on the original notice.
