Williams F1 team under pressure as results slump and car flaws persist

Williams Racing is struggling in the 2024 Formula 1 season, sitting ninth in the Constructors' Championship with just 11 points. Team principal James Vowles, hired in 2023 with high expectations, faces mounting criticism after the Hungarian Grand Prix highlighted the car’s lack of competitiveness.

Former Haas boss Günther Steiner publicly questioned Vowles’ performance, suggesting the team may fail to score any points this year if improvements are not made. Drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz have pointed to deep‑seated structural issues in the FW48, describing them as part of the team’s “genetic DNA” and noting the car’s excess weight and poor handling on high‑downforce circuits.

Williams plans a significant upgrade package for the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix and is already focusing on the 2027 car design to address the identified weaknesses. The team hopes the new front wing and other developments will reverse the downward trend, but doubts remain about the speed and effectiveness of the fixes.
