Williams F1 team faces performance crisis ahead of Belgium Grand Prix

Williams team principal James Vowles acknowledged that the current pace of development is insufficient to close the performance gap after a disappointing British Grand Prix. The team introduced a new front wing at Silverstone, but the upgrade fell short of expectations, leaving the FW48 still struggling with weight issues and frequent Q1 eliminations. Vowles said the squad will conduct a comprehensive analysis of all upgrades introduced so far to identify where the programme has stalled.

He emphasized the need to “reset and go back attacking” for the upcoming Spa‑Francorchamps event, noting that the circuit’s mix of high‑speed and technical sections offers a chance to test any improvements. Vowles also highlighted the team’s culture of openness and learning, stating that the analytical work over the next two weeks will shape Williams’ development plan for the remainder of the 2026 season and beyond. The team currently sits eighth in the constructors' standings with eleven points after nine races.
