British Columbia wildfire mitigation and fire incidents
Various wildfire-related incidents and mitigation efforts are occurring across British Columbia. In the Cariboo Regional District, a home on Horsefly Road near Williams Lake was destroyed by a fire on September 29. While the occupant escaped without injury, a dog is believed to have perished. Emergency Social Services are assisting the family.
In the Kamloops Fire Zone, the BC Wildfire Service is conducting planned pile burning to reduce fuel accumulation. These projects, assisted by Interfor, include locations near Clearwater, Lee Creek, and Adams Lake, as well as at Harper Mountain Ski Hill. Residents should expect visible smoke in these areas.
Other regional activities include a community chipping event in Eastgate on October 19, organized by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen to help residents reduce flammable vegetation around their properties. Additionally, a panel of forestry experts, including former MLA Mike Morris, will meet in Penticton on October 6 to discuss the environmental challenges posed by current forestry practices.
