Williams Lake child-care capacity grows 48 per cent amid access gaps
Licensed child-care capacity in Williams Lake has increased by 48 per cent since 2019-20, rising from 497 spaces to 735 spaces for the 2026-27 period, according to the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
Despite this growth, local providers and residents report that increased capacity does not always translate to usable or accessible care. Challenges include significant staffing shortages and a mismatch between available spaces and specific community needs regarding age groups and program types. Some licensed spaces remain non-operational due to a lack of qualified educators.
Providers noted that maintaining required educator-to-child ratios is a primary concern, particularly for infant and toddler programs which require more intensive supervision than older age groups.
