Williams Lake woman calls for action after dog killed in baited snare

Victoria Savile of Williams Lake is advocating for policy changes after her five-year-old Maremma livestock guardian dog, Berta, was killed by a baited snare near her property in the Pablo Creek area.

Berta's body was discovered on October 18 by a neighbor. Following the incident, Savile contacted the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line, and conservation officers arrived to remove the trap. Savile, who has lived in the area for eight years, expressed that she was unaware of the presence of trapping lines in the vicinity.

Savile has joined the Canadian wildlife protection charity The Fur-Bearers to campaign for increased safety and conservation. She is collaborating with Nicole Trigg, whose dog was also killed by a baited trap in the East Kootenays earlier this year. The Fur-Bearers noted that freedom of information requests have documented 100 incidents involving pets and trapping.
