Williams Racing faces backlash over special livery timing

Williams Racing is facing criticism following the unveiling of a special throwback livery for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. The design, featuring white, green, and navy blue colors, is inspired by the team’s 1981 FW07C car to commemorate its return to the Spanish capital.

Controversy arose because the timing of the livery's debut coincides with the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. During the late 1970s, Williams received significant financial backing from Saudi Arabian firms, including a construction company owned by the father of Osama bin Laden. While the specific 1981 design being revived does not feature the Bin Laden name, the team’s cars in 1979 did carry the branding.

Formula 1 commentator Will Buxton noted that while the intention was to celebrate the team's history, the timing could lead to uncomfortable associations for viewers. The special livery will be driven by Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz during the race weekend.
