Williams Racing faces structural overhaul and 2026 season struggles

Williams Racing is undergoing a massive organizational and technical overhaul while struggling through a difficult 2026 Formula 1 campaign. Team Principal James Vowles has described the challenge as “flying the plane and rebuilding it at the same time,” as the team attempts to modernize decades-old infrastructure while simultaneously competing on track.

The team’s new FW47 chassis has faced significant setbacks, including a three-week production delay that caused it to miss the Barcelona shakedown and arrive late to pre-season testing. The car is also struggling with excess weight; however, due to FIA cost cap restrictions, Williams must implement weight reduction measures gradually over several races rather than all at once. A major upgrade package is currently scheduled for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in September.

Vowles noted that the team’s transformation is a long-term process, requiring years to properly recruit and integrate high-caliber talent. He also emphasized that the cost cap forces a difficult trade-off, requiring resources to be diverted from immediate car development toward urgent facility upgrades. Drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz have commented on the team's current struggles, with Sainz noting the gap in production speed compared to competitors like Aston Martin.
