Willie Nelson becomes figurehead for campaign against AI data centers

Democratic Party organizers and environmental activists are rallying behind country music star Willie Nelson in a campaign against the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers. Nelson has criticized the facilities on social media, describing them as “loud, water thieving, light polluting” entities that threaten farmland and the livelihoods of small family farmers.

Jane Kleeb, president of the environmental group Bold Alliance and chairwoman of the Nebraska Democratic Party, has referred to Nelson as a “Yoda” figure for the movement, advocating for significant data center reform.

In response, the Data Center Coalition (DCC) defended the industry, characterizing data centers as essential digital infrastructure for modern life, including telehealth and digital education. Dan Diorio of the DCC cited the industry's economic impact, noting it contributed to $1.7 trillion in GDP and supported 5.5 million jobs nationally in 2024. The coalition stated it is working with policymakers to ensure the sustainable use of energy and natural resources.
