Willmott Dixon to lead £36m Maltings Theatre redevelopment

Willmott Dixon has been selected to lead a £36 million redevelopment of the Maltings Theatre in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The project, supported by the Northumberland County Council’s Cabinet, aims to transform the arts venue into a modern cultural destination.

The redesign will include improved performance facilities, cinema screens, hospitality spaces, and community amenities. A key feature of the reconfiguration is bringing the main theatre, café bar, and dining facilities onto a single level to enhance accessibility and visitor circulation. The lower floors will be remodeled to house a main cinema auditorium and a boutique cinema screen.

The project budget has increased by £7.7 million to a total of £36 million. Funding includes £28.5 million through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal. Preliminary works are targeted to begin in November, pending final financial approval.
