Georgia dismisses head coach Willy Sagnol

The Georgian Football Federation has dismissed head coach Willy Sagnol following a 1-0 home defeat against Northern Ireland in the UEFA Nations League. The loss occurred in the final moments of stoppage time, compounded by a missed penalty from star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Sagnol, a former Bayern Munich defender and France international, has led the Georgian national team since February 2021. His tenure is considered historic, as he guided the nation to its first-ever appearance at a European Championship during EURO 2024, where the team reached the round of 16.

During his 57 to 58 matches in charge, Sagnol achieved a record of approximately 25 wins, 10 draws, and 23 losses. He is succeeded by Ramaz Svanadze, the former U-21 coach, who has signed a contract to lead the senior national team until the end of 2028.
