Wilmington fatal crash involving electric wheelchair under investigation

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal collision involving a man in an electric wheelchair in Wilmington. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on a Friday along northbound Philadelphia Pike, north of East Holly Oak Road.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a 69-year-old Wilmington resident in an electric wheelchair left the sidewalk on the east side of the road and entered the path of a Jeep Cherokee traveling in the left lane. The vehicle struck the man, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Jeep, a 51-year-old woman from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, initially stopped at the scene before leaving. State troopers later located the driver and her vehicle at a nearby residence. No arrests have been made as investigators continue to evaluate whether charges will be filed. The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.
