Wil–Wangen knitted mushroom art installation draws community attention
A community art project in the Swiss towns of Wil and Wangen featured 370 hand‑knitted mushrooms, modeled after the shaggy ink cap. Initiated by a local "Wilerin" and organized by the artist collective Ohm41, the mushrooms—each 20‑30 cm tall—were created by women from Wil, Wangen and surrounding schools, including Madame Tricot (Dominique Kähler) and Madame Bouton (Silvia Brunold). The installation was displayed in a "hexenring" in Wil’s Stadtgarten on a Saturday, accompanied by an explanatory plaque naming the contributors, among them a 101‑year‑old woman who knitted one of the pieces.
Vandalism struck the next evening: several mushrooms, including the one made by the centenarian, were removed or damaged. Brunold appealed for the return of the missing pieces, highlighting the project's aim of weaving a network of women across the two towns.
The project, titled "Kipppunkt," explored the concept of a tipping point, using the mushrooms as a visual metaphor for ecological and social thresholds.
