Wimal Weerawansa faces legal action over rally speech
Former Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa is facing potential contempt of court proceedings following remarks made during a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) political rally in Anuradhapura in September.
The legal action stems from comments allegedly criticizing a Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court order issued on September 4, 2026, regarding the remand of a suspect. Following instructions from Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka Bodaragama, police conducted an investigation that included reviewing unedited video footage from seven television channels and recording statements from rally organizers, journalists, and security personnel.
Investigators have submitted their findings, including witness statements and video evidence, to the court registrar. The matter is being processed under the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Act, No. 8 of 2024, and could result in proceedings before the Court of Appeal. If found guilty, Weerawansa could face penalties such as fines or imprisonment.
