Wimbledon 2026 adopts electronic line‑calling technology and revamps broadcast traditions

Electronic line calling (ELC) has replaced line judges at Wimbledon, remaining in use across all courts since 2025. The system, based on Hawk‑Eye with 18 cameras and an automated voice, is promoted by the All England Club as more accurate than human officials. After a deactivation incident and a power‑outage‑triggered outage during qualifying last year, the club says the problem has been fixed and has added visual indicators on scoreboards to show calls.

For the 2026 Championships Wimbledon is introducing a video‑review system on the six main show courts, allowing umpires to request replays similar to VAR. This joins the US Open, Australian Open and ATP tour in offering a new layer of oversight for disputed calls.

Television production has also been updated. Broadcasts now feature enhanced visuals, close‑up shots and a more sponsor‑filled royal box, reflecting a shift from traditional elite seating. Polish commentary highlighted these broadcast changes and the evolving traditions of the tournament.
