Wimbledon players push for larger prize‑money share amid tournament

A group of about twenty top tennis players continued their dispute with Grand Slam organisers at Wimbledon, demanding a larger share of tournament revenues. After a 20% increase in Wimbledon’s prize pool, the players say the rise is insufficient and seek to raise their take to roughly 22% of total earnings, up from the current 15%. They have also shortened pre‑tournament media obligations to 15 minutes, a rule they applied at Roland‑Garros and intend to keep for the first week in London. While some, such as Ben Shelton and Alex De Minaur, praised the prize‑money boost and complied with the media schedule, others, including Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, kept their brief press conferences to ten minutes, emphasizing that the issue is not only about money but also player welfare and involvement in decision‑making.

On the court, Canadian Félix Auger‑Aliassime defeated Alexander Shevchenko, advancing to the next round and set to face Croatia’s Dino Prizmic. Fellow Canadians were eliminated: Reilly Shapovalov retired with a shoulder injury, Bianca Andreescu lost to Zhang Shuai, and Leylah Fernandez fell to Janice Tjen. The match results were reported alongside the ongoing player protest.
