Wimbledon refuses World Cup TV on courts, fans watch on phones as Kane scores
Organisers of the Wimbledon tennis tournament decided not to broadcast World Cup 2026 matches on the event’s big screens. CEO Sally Bolton explained that football would not be shown on the tournament’s "The Hill" screens or in player areas, acknowledging that spectators would likely watch the games on their mobile devices.
Despite the ban, many fans followed the matches on phones while matches were underway, and a roar of applause erupted across the grass courts when England’s Harry Kane scored an equalising goal against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 75th minute. The incident highlighted the overlap between Wimbledon (29 June – 12 July) and the World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, prompting some other sporting events to adjust their schedules to avoid the clash.
