Wincenty Kućma installs contemporary sculptures in Kraków basilica

Six monumental sculptures by Professor Wincenty Kućma have been installed on consoles in the main nave of the Jesuit Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Kraków. The installation serves as a contemporary dialogue with the basilica’s century-old artistic program.

Originally designed by architect Franciszek Mączyński in the early 20th century, the basilica was conceived as a unified work involving various artists, including Xawery Dunikowski, Karol Hukan, and Jan Raszka. While the original architectural documentation provided spaces for monumental figures, Kućma’s works are viewed not as historical reconstructions or imitations of the 1910 style, but as a modern interpretation that adds a new chapter to the existing architectural and sculptural ensemble.
