Wind energy developments in Germany: record-breaking turbine and storm damage
In Schipkau, Germany, the company Gicon has completed the construction of a 365-meter-tall wind turbine, currently the highest in the world. The structure utilizes an unconventional lattice design similar to the Eiffel Tower to withstand high-altitude winds. This project aims to test whether the benefits of offshore wind power, such as higher full-load hours, can be successfully implemented on land.
In a separate incident, Storm Luise caused significant damage in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the district of Weeze, specifically in the Wemb area, a 70-meter-tall wind turbine collapsed during the peak of the storm. The mast and rotor blades were completely destroyed, leaving only the base. The turbine was approximately 20 years old and operated by an individual. No injuries were reported following the collapse.
