Wind energy expansion faces local opposition in Plzeň region

In the Plzeň region of the Czech Republic, local opposition to wind energy is intensifying as municipalities implement blanket bans on wind turbines. In the municipality of Čížkov, a farmer from Železný Újezd, Radek Sochor, found his plans to build a small 400-kilowatt turbine blocked by a recent change in the local zoning plan. While previous regulations permitted turbines up to 35 meters and 500 kilowatts, the new plan prohibits all wind energy to protect the landscape near the Brdy Protected Landscape Area.

Regional officials note that while municipalities have the legal right to ban wind turbines, courts frequently challenge such blanket prohibitions as disproportionate restrictions on business.

The conflict is part of a broader regional tension regarding the government's use of acceleration zones for rapid wind farm development. Estimates suggest up to 70 wind turbines, some reaching 250 meters in height, could be built in southern Plzeň. Local mayors have criticized the state for an information vacuum, claiming that a lack of communication regarding the impact and economic benefits of these projects has allowed misinformation to spread and fueled public resistance.
