Wind energy impact on microclimates and local environments under scrutiny
A new scientific study published in the journal Boundary-Layer Meteorology investigates the impact of wind turbines on near-surface microclimates and soil moisture. Utilizing high-resolution Large-Eddy-Simulations (LES) via the PALM-LES model developed by the Leibniz Institute, researchers from the Technical University of Dresden simulated how wind farms affect temperature and energy flows under various atmospheric stability conditions.
The findings suggest that wind turbines can alter local climates, potentially affecting soil moisture and agriculture. This research aims to isolate the specific effects of turbines from natural weather variability by comparing scenarios with and without wind farms under identical conditions.
Parallel to these scientific findings, a documentary titled "Wenn der Wind sich dreht" examines the broader social and environmental criticisms of wind energy in Germany.
