Wind energy projects face local opposition and decommissioning in Germany
Residents in the German municipality of Steinreich are protesting against the expansion of wind energy projects. Local officials claim the Regional Planning Community Lausitz-Spreewald has ignored community concerns regarding the designation of four areas for wind turbines. Brandenburg Infrastructure Minister Robert Crumbach met with residents to address the issue; while he found no immediate legal grounds to intervene, he pledged to improve communication and the regional planning process.
In a separate incident in Saxony, a wind turbine in Oberwiera is being dismantled less than two years after its installation. The approximately 10 million euro facility, which began operation in late 2023, is being decommissioned following persistent noise complaints from local residents. Despite attempts to resolve the issue by replacing the gearbox, the low-frequency humming persisted, leading the operator and manufacturer Vestas to agree to the removal of the structure.
