Wind energy projects linked to rise in far-right voting in France
A study conducted by researchers including economist Martin Faulques has identified a correlation between wind energy projects and the rise of far-right voting in France. By analyzing 34,448 French communes between 2007 and 2022, the research shows that the filing of a wind permit is associated with an increase in local support for far-right parties, an effect that persists once the projects are completed.
The study suggests that populist rhetoric, such as that used by the Rassemblement National, capitalizes on local opposition to renewable energy. By framing wind projects as impositions from central authorities that threaten rural landscapes and heritage, political actors can transform local grievances into electoral support. The findings highlight that the management of the energy transition and how residents are consulted during the early stages of project planning are critical factors in local political shifts.
