Iowa wind farm study finds higher bat mortality at turbine edges
A two-year study of 19 wind farms in Iowa, United States, has revealed that wind turbines located at the edges of wind farms experience higher estimated bat mortality rates. Researchers utilized a statistical model to account for missing carcasses due to scavenging or vegetation cover, allowing for more accurate estimations of species-specific mortality.
The study suggests that proximity to certain habitats and specific weather conditions, such as temperature and wind speed, may contribute to the increased risk at these perimeter locations. By incorporating environmental data, the researchers were able to identify patterns that traditional carcass counts alone might have missed.
