Window maintenance: identifying mold and drafts

Homeowners should be cautious of small black spots appearing around window frames, as these may indicate mold growth rather than simple dirt. Mold often develops during autumn and winter when warm, humid indoor air meets cold window surfaces, causing condensation. Persistent moisture near seals or walls creates an ideal environment for fungal growth, even in regularly cleaned homes.

To address drafts, it is essential to identify the specific source of air movement, such as gaps between the window sash and frame or faulty wall connections. Effective sealing must reduce unwanted airflow while maintaining necessary ventilation. Using excessively thick seals can interfere with proper window closure, and blocking air vents can lead to more serious issues. Different materials, including foam, rubber, silicone, and brush profiles, should be selected based on the specific gap size and window structure.
