Windstar Cruises Refits World Explorer into Mediterranean Luxury Yacht Star Explorer

The former expedition vessel World Explorer, built in 2019 for polar cruises, entered the West Sea shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, in early April for a major conversion. The ship will be renamed Star Explorer and become a 224‑guest luxury yacht operated by Windstar Cruises, scheduled to enter service on 28 December 2026.

The refit involves extensive structural changes: expedition‑specific spaces such as Zodiac launch decks and a scientific conference auditorium are being removed and rebuilt as panoramic suites, a spa, and other leisure facilities. John Gunner, head of Windstar’s expansion projects, said the work is more complex than building the sister vessel Star Seeker because World Explorer is being altered after completion and active service.

Once converted, Star Explorer will sail year‑round in the Mediterranean, offering itineraries that include ports such as Barcelona, Rome and Venice, shifting its role from Antarctic exploration to upscale regional cruising.
