Wine experimental port brings Windows compatibility to OpenBSD
Developer Thomas Frohwein has proposed an experimental port of Wine to OpenBSD, marking a significant step toward running Windows applications on the operating system. The development was made possible by a technical workaround that emulates the %gs segment register in software, bypassing OpenBSD's inability to set its base directly.
Initial testing has shown positive results for dozens of 64-bit Windows programs, including applications like Notepad++ and games such as The Witcher 3. However, the port currently lacks support for 32-bit software because WoW64 is not functional.
This development is considered timely due to the increasing prevalence of 64-bit Windows software. Unlike traditional emulators, Wine functions as a compatibility layer that translates Windows API calls into native POSIX calls without emulating the processor.
