Wine experts discuss glass selection and seasonal pairings

Industry professionals and experts suggest that selecting the ideal wine glass depends more on balance and shape than on the trend of using thin stems. Michael Mackenzie, wine lead at Poon’s at Somerset House, notes that while thin stems are common in high-end venues, the tactile impression, stem length, and overall proportions are more critical for the tasting experience.

Regarding seasonal consumption, experts recommend transitioning to white wines with more body and complexity during autumn and winter. Suggested varieties include saline-edged Albariño and fuller-bodied Godello from Galicia, Spain, as well as aromatic Mosel Riesling or richer South African Chenin Blanc to complement heartier seasonal meals like stews and roasts.
