Wine industry faces labor shortages and new EU labeling regulations

The global wine industry is facing significant shifts regarding ethical production and labor management. A report by the Sustainable Wine Roundtable highlights critical challenges in the viticulture supply chain, including labor shortages and rising operational costs. The investigation suggests that the sector must move beyond formal compliance to ensure ethical contracts, supplier traceability, and dignified wages to maintain international market reputation.

Simultaneously, the industry is seeking natural alternatives to traditional animal-based fining products. This shift is driven by increasing environmental and ethical sensitivities, as well as new requirements under EU Regulation 2023/1606, which mandates the disclosure of animal-derived ingredients used in wine production.
