Wineries highlight high-altitude wines from Portugal’s Alentejo region

Producers in the Serra de São Mamede area of Portalegre, Alentejo, are showcasing wines characterized by high-altitude cultivation and distinct regional identities.

Quinta da Fonte Souto, owned by the Symington family, has released Florão Branco 2025 and Florão Tinto 2024. The white wine is a blend of 75% Arinto and 25% Verdelho, noted for its freshness and acidity derived from the elevation of the Serra de São Mamede. The red wine is a complex blend featuring Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, and Vinha Velha.

Additionally, Quinta da Vinha dos Padres, led by winemaker Susana Esteban, produces wines from century-old vineyards using traditional talhas (clay vessels). Their Vila Maria series, including the 2022 and 2023 white wines and the 2022 red wine, emphasizes mineral and stony characteristics typical of the region's field blends.
