Wineries in Virginia and Maryland highlight local terroir and history

Northern Virginia and Maryland are seeing developments in their local wine industries through historic estates and innovative farming practices.

In Northern Virginia, several winery estates are highlighted for their connection to regional history. These include a site in Warrenton’s Vint Hill, a former WWII intelligence location, and the Effingham estate in Nokesville, which features a manor built around 1777. Other notable properties in the region include locations in Broad Run and Vienna.

In Maryland, the Old Westminster Winery and Burnt Hill Farm are working to define the state’s wine identity. Led by siblings Drew Baker, Ashli Johnson, and Lisa Hinton, the operation utilizes low-intervention winemaking alongside regenerative farming, including orchards, livestock, and beekeeping. The family focuses on Maryland’s diverse terroir to create unique wines rather than following traditional styles from California or Europe.
