Wingstop's cashless rollout draws customer backlash

Wingstop has been testing cashless restaurants since 2022, when a prototype store opened in Dallas, Texas. A recent six‑second video shared on X shows an employee at an undisclosed location taping a sign that reads the venue will no longer accept cash, with a customer in North Carolina reporting they were turned away for trying to pay with bills.

The chain says the move is part of a broader shift to card‑only and app‑based payments, joining other fast‑food brands such as KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell that have expressed ambitions for fully digital sales. Critics have questioned the legality of refusing legal tender and warned that mandatory card transactions could increase processing fees. Wingstop has not responded to requests for comment.
