Winneba: Five-year-old girl drowns in uncovered borehole

A five-year-old girl drowned after falling into an uncovered borehole in Ansaful, Winneba, on Thursday evening. The incident occurred during a funeral programme at a Christ Apostolic Church.

Following the child's disappearance around 5 p.m., relatives and neighbors conducted a search, eventually locating a slipper near the borehole. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) used a ladder to recover the girl's body from the facility after pumping water out of the borehole. The operation was assisted by the Ghana Police Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns regarding neglected water infrastructure in Ghana. Similar incidents involving uncovered boreholes have occurred in other regions, such as Koforidua, raising questions about the management of community water facilities in areas where piped water is unreliable.
