Winnipeg architecture and art explore faith and history

Winnipeg, Manitoba, serves as a significant site for exploring the intersection of art, faith, and architecture. In the historic Saint Boniface district, the Saint Boniface Cathedral stands as a testament to cultural resilience.

The original monumental cathedral, completed in 1908, was largely destroyed by fire on July 22, 1968. Rather than rebuilding from scratch, architect Étienne Gaboury designed the current cathedral within the surviving ruins. The new structure opened in 1972, preserving the stone façade and exterior walls of the former building. The site also holds historical importance as the location of the grave of Métis leader Louis Riel.
