Winnipeg driver ticketed after leaving dog in hot car and hitting bystander
A 67‑year‑old man parked his vehicle in the Osborne Street grocery‑store lot in Winnipeg on July 30, 2026 and left his large German Shepherd inside while temperatures were around 30 °C with a humidex of 43. Several bystanders noticed the thirsty, distressed dog and gave it cold water through a slightly open window.
When the man returned to the car he became belligerent, struck a bystander with his vehicle, reversed into a parked pickup truck and fled the scene at high speed. Police later located him at a residence in the Lord Roberts neighbourhood, where the dog was tied in the backyard. He received provincial offence notices under the Highway Traffic Act for careless driving, parking where prohibited and failing to exchange details, and Animal Care Act notices for inflicting suffering, failing to provide water and failing to protect the animal from heat.
