Winnipeg Ember FC revealed as Northern Super League expansion team

Winnipeg Ember FC has been announced as the Northern Super League’s first expansion franchise, set to begin play in 2027. The club, which will be Winnipeg’s first professional women’s sports team, unveiled its official name, crest, and color scheme at an event at The Forks.

The club’s identity is inspired by the Manitoba prairie sky. The official colors include Midnight Dusk, Violet Haze, Destroyer Pink, Sunset Blush, and Ember Glow. The crest features a Sundog, a phenomenon occurring on clear prairie days, along with a star representing the morning star and a subtle “W” for Winnipeg. The club’s tagline, “Let Them Howl,” serves as a tribute to Nellie McClung, a prominent Manitoba figure in the women’s suffrage movement.

Co-founders Desiree Scott and Rob Gale, alongside president Dayna Spiring, led the announcement. Scott noted that the name Ember was chosen to reflect the warmth of the local community and a resilient attitude. The team is scheduled to host open tryouts this weekend at the Winnipeg Soccer Federation Soccer South facility.
